Advice On Laying Pavers or Bricks

Advice on Laying Pavers or Bricks – Choosing the Right Base

When it comes to laying pavers or bricks, there are two common methods that can be used to achieve a strong, level and long-lasting finish. The method you choose will depend on the type of project, the ground conditions, drainage requirements and the finish you are looking to achieve.

Both methods can be very effective when the preparation is done correctly.

1. Laying Pavers on a Sand or Rock Base

One of the most common methods for laying pavers is using a prepared sand or rock base.

The ground is first prepared and compacted before a suitable base material is installed. Depending on the project, this may include crushed rock or other appropriate base material. Once the base is properly compacted, a layer of bedding sand can be screeded to the required levels.

The sand is carefully screeded so that the surface is even and has the correct falls for drainage. The pavers can then be laid onto the prepared surface.

This method is particularly useful for areas such as:

  • Garden paths
  • Driveways
  • Patios
  • Courtyards
  • Walkways
  • Outdoor entertaining areas

One of the main advantages of a sand or rock base is that it allows the levels and falls to be adjusted during preparation. This can be particularly helpful where drainage and water run-off need to be considered.

2. Laying Pavers on a Mortar Base

The second method is to lay pavers or bricks onto a mortar base.

With this method, a suitable mortar bed is prepared and the pavers are positioned into the mortar. A string line and level can be used to establish the required levels, straight lines and falls.

The mortar method can provide a very solid installation and is often suitable where a more permanent, fixed paving surface is required.

Care needs to be taken during installation to ensure the mortar is at the correct thickness and that each paver is positioned at the correct level. Once the mortar sets, making adjustments becomes much more difficult.

Which Paving Method Is Best?

There isn’t one method that is right for every paving project.

Laying pavers on a sand or rock base provides flexibility during installation and makes it easier to adjust levels and falls. It can also be a practical option for many landscaping and paving projects.

Laying pavers on a mortar base provides a fixed installation and can be a good choice where the project requires pavers or bricks to be firmly bedded into place.

The most important part of either method is good preparation. A poorly prepared base can lead to movement, uneven pavers, cracking, pooling water and other problems over time.

Getting the Levels and Drainage Right

One of the most important considerations when laying pavers is getting the levels and drainage right.

Paved areas should generally be installed with appropriate falls so that water can drain away rather than sitting on the surface. The existing ground conditions, surrounding buildings, garden areas and drainage points all need to be considered before work begins.

Taking the time to prepare the area properly can make a significant difference to the finished result and the long-term performance of the paving.
